A large telecommunications provider responsible for supporting nearly 1 million customers across the central U.S. faced a critical inflection point with its services. High-churn, continuity-dependent operations: SOC/security operations, technical support, RPA maintenance, and application development with institutional knowledge requirements are best suited for U.S.-based BPO. When offshore still might make sense

Highly transactional, low-risk work is one area where offshore BPO could still make sense. Non-sensitive, high-volume commodity processing with minimal compliance exposure could work outside the U.S.

Eliminating the certification gap: How The Meridian Program has helped embed ServiceNow curriculum directly into college coursework

The Meridian Program is a unique partnership approach to college-level internships designed to equip STEM and Computer Science students with the skills and experience needed to launch successful careers in IT. By collaborating closely with colleges and universities, Provalus, a division of Optomi Professional Services , provides interns with opportunities to work on real-world client projects before graduation, ensuring they gain meaningful, hands-on experience and a clear pathway to a career in IT. This innovative model not only prepares students for the workforce but also strengthens a sustainable talent pipeline, furthering our mission to create high-quality jobs in rural America.

Now aligned with seven colleges and universities, Provalus partnered with Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) in Nacogdoches, TX, to build the first iteration of Meridian in 2022, aiming to combine classroom learning with real-world training under the guidance of industry experts.

Our partnership established a clear path to hire interns at SFA as full-time employees at Provalus upon graduation. However, one valuable prerequisite was missing: students began the Meridian Program internship without ServiceNow skills. Meridian interns were spending too much internship time training rather than gaining hands-on experience, limiting their scope of work within the program and hindering development.

SFA aimed to create a course to prepare future ServiceNow interns to make an immediate impact as soon as their internship starts. The result was immediate for Provalus interns. In 2024, the first ServiceNow course was introduced at SFA, enabling students to earn credits while also completing their ServiceNow certifications. Now, students arrive at The Meridian Program certified and ready to contribute to meaningful work right from the beginning.

According to Dr. Matthew A. Beauregard, SFA Associate Dean for Faculty and Administration, the new ServiceNow course has shrunk the gap to onboard an intern working in ServiceNow by an entire semester. Eliminating this certification gap transformed student career readiness, with nearly 100% of the inaugural class securing internships. Additionally, multiple students have shifted from internships to full-time employment with Provalus.

Provalus hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 3 ^rd for the grand opening of our newest Center of Excellence in North Wilkesboro, NC, marking our second location in North Carolina.

When revitalizing our centers, we aim to pay tribute to those who were in the space before us. In North Wilkesboro, our building once housed the offices and printing operations of The Journal Patriot newspaper. We proudly display their signage that was a mainstay on the outside of the building for decades, in our main conference room. This, along with other small touches throughout the space were very well received by local leaders, business owners, and residents who joined us for site tours after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

With over 100 team members in North Wilkesboro, Provalus is well ahead of our goal to create 150 new careers in Wilkes County over three years. These careers will have a multi-million-dollar impact on the local economy annually while fostering a dedicated workforce and fueling a new era of technology talent equipped to strengthen America’s future.

We appreciate the support from the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce and the entire Wilkes County community for welcoming us to this wonderful town. When companies place high-quality, onshore careers in rural communities, they tend to unlock unusually strong workforce stability, because people are able to build long-term careers without leaving the places they already call home.

That continuity compounds into better performance over time, while the steady presence of career-track jobs creates ripple effects that extend beyond the workplace, bringing new energy and investment back to local Main Streets. Together, those dynamics explain why rural hiring, when done intentionally, can deliver returns that reach both the balance sheet and the broader community.

Rural America offers a retention advantage that many companies overlook

In many rural communities, access to stable, career-track work is limited. When those opportunities exist locally, they tend to carry more weight than comparable roles in crowded labor markets. Economic development research consistently shows that downtowns without a reliable daytime population face higher storefront churn and weaker sales, even when physical improvements are made. In practical terms, restaurants, coffee shops, and service businesses cannot survive on weekends, events, or tourism alone.

Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond notes that sustained downtown recovery depends on nearby employment that supports regular daytime activity, not just episodic foot traffic or one-time investments. When workers are absent, commercial districts struggle to maintain occupancy and momentum.

Anchor employers create repeat customers, not one-time traffic

Anchor employers matter because they increase the daytime population in a concentrated area. That population shows up five days a week and spends locally out of convenience and habit. The importance of that dynamic becomes clear when it disappears. National transaction data shows that weekday lunch sales declined sharply as remote work increased, underscoring how dependent downtown food and service businesses are on nearby workers.

In small towns, even modest employment centers can have outsized effects.

The USDA estimates that food-away-from-home spending reached $4,485 per capita in 2023. Not all of that spending happens downtown, but it gives a grounded reference point for what “disposable lunch-and-coffee money” looks like in aggregate.

If 200 more workers each spend $12 downtown twice a week on lunch or coffee, that translates to roughly $4,800 in weekly revenue, or about $240,000 a year over a typical work calendar. For many rural Main Streets, that level of recurring demand can be the difference between shortened hours and expansion.

Recurring spending does not redevelop buildings by itself, but it changes the risk calculation for business owners, landlords, and lenders. When downtown businesses see consistent weekday demand, they are more willing to extend hours, hire staff, and invest in their spaces. Property owners are more likely to renovate. Financing becomes easier to justify. Over time, that confidence supports reinvestment that is grounded in real economic activity rather than speculation.

As fraud threats grew more sophisticated, a leading U.S. credit union found their Fraud Operations teams falling behind. Performance lagged with no scalable staffing approach, and turnover plagued its remote workforce. Veterans lift first‑contact resolution by staying calm and following SOPs

Veteran talent helps agents keep conversations on track when emotions run high. A steadier tone and step-by-step execution reduce avoidable escalations, which is the fastest path to higher first‑contact resolution.

Current state of most desks

Peak periods, outages, or billing issues raise caller emotion. Under stress, agents drift from scripts and skip steps, which lowers Quality Assurance (QA) scores and pushes more contacts into multi‑touch resolution.
First Contact Resolution (FCR) is highly sensitive to consistency. When teams wobble on SOPs, callbacks and transfers follow, and customers feel the friction.

Why Onshore Wins on CX: Lower Attrition, Faster Improvement, Higher NPS

Good customer service is simple to describe and hard to deliver. The teams that do it best share one trait: they stay together. When people stick around, they learn faster, fix more on the first try, and make customers feel heard. That is the core advantage of onshore customer experience programs in the United States.

Start with retention, not seat rate

Retention sets the ceiling on quality. Global manager surveys report very high annual turnover in contact centers, with the biggest centers faring the worst. High churn resets proficiency and culture. Keeping people flips that script. When a team stays intact, product knowledge compounds, handoffs drop, repeat contacts fall, and first-contact resolution rises. Replacing people is costly and distracting. Retaining them is the win that lets everything else work.

What typical retention looks like:

Philippines : The national industry association reported voluntary attrition of around 25 to 30 percent in 2023. That doesn’t include performance-related involuntary attrition.
India: Deloitte’s India Talent Outlook reported average India Inc attrition at roughly 17 percent in 2023, with IT and IT-enabled services around 15.5 percent. These are economy and sector figures, not onshore specific, but they show the general range.

We were thrilled to welcome students from Homeschool Connections, a group based at Harvin Clarendon County Library, to our facility in Manning, South Carolina. During their visit, they explored the exciting world of technology and customer service careers.

Coordinated by Children’s Librarian Lakesha Meredith and Provalus Recruiter Gabe Perez, the students engaged in an immersive experience, including team-building activities, a guided tour of the Provalus facility, and an inside look at IT operations.

“We provide IT support, cybersecurity, and customer experience services, and we’re always looking for passionate individuals who want to grow in this field,” said Joe Kloiber, IT Services Delivery Director. During the tour, Kloiber and his team introduced students to the facility’s operations, explaining the various career pathways available at Provalus.

Between seasoned speakers, interactive sessions, and a tour of our state-of-the-art facility in Brewton, Alabama, our inaugural Stars and Stripes Summit was a massive success.

Upon arrival in Brewton, attendees quickly jumped into an interactive roundtable session with Dr. Jim Schleckser, CEO of the CEO Project and Inc.com columnist. Schleckser focused on many issues that fast-growing organizations experience as they reach higher performance levels and challenged attendees to speak candidly on the issues they face within their own organizations. Throughout the session, connections were made, relationships were forged, and knowledge was shared.

Our evening session featured two key moments: an opening city proclamation from Brewton, Alabama Mayor Yank Lovelace recognizing Provalus' community impact, and a closing keynote address by Jason Van Camp, Founder and Chairman of Warrior Rising Foundation and author of the bestselling books "Deliberate Discomfort" and "Authority."

Along with summit attendees, more than 50 Provalus employees and community members joined the audience to learn how Van Camp’s unparalleled experience in leadership, resilience, and high-performance team building has allowed him to translate military principles into actionable strategies that drive business success. Todd discussed how REE Medical assists with coordinating care between Veterans and neutral third-party physicians who provide Veterans with strong and detailed documentation that they can use to support their VA disability claim. REE Medical is dedicated to ensuring that Veterans receive accurate and thorough medical documents for their claims to evaluate their disability rating with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Paul Farley, TrustedSec Field CISO, was our final speaker. Extremely skilled in communicating complex concepts to diverse audiences, he has been recognized for facilitating employee growth and fostering strong connections between security teams and business stakeholders. Farley not only shared real-time examples of potential security exploitations, but also valuable insights on how a business leader can better engage with those tasked with keeping their technical environment safe and secure. Slashing Resolution Times and Costs in Half by Implementing a Unified Global Support Structure

A Fortune 500 global network broadcast corporation consisting of more than 10 different business entities encountered a surplus of challenges including an outdated help desk model supporting their end-users and unnecessarily lengthened timelines for problem resolution. Each business entity had its own help desk with disparate SLAs, knowledge bases, and tools resulting in a lack of standardization across the organization. This created massive technical debt as they leveraged a combination of costly tools, an outsourced vendor, and full-time employees (FTEs) to support their multiple help desks while seeing a degradation in customer satisfaction (CSAT) scores from their end-users.

Upon immersing ourselves in the client environment, we quickly learned of the challenges with their support model and knowledge management. Leveraging our Knowledge Team, Provalus uncovered that the client’s outsourcing partner of 15+ years had not optimized their knowledge, letting articles age without updates for an average of 2 years and including no metadata for keyword search. Additionally, the client’s separate business entities all had their own knowledge management tools aside from the main ITSM tool. Provalus optimized the situation by retiring unviewed and outdated knowledge while bringing articles from other tools into the picture and implementing keyword metadata to help improve search. Because of these improvements, our newly established global service desk was able to govern support requests that the previous vendor was unable to fulfill.

With knowledge improved, Provalus then focused on implementing our quality assurance solutions into the client environment. Focused on SLA and KPI improvement, Provalus QA provided proactive monitoring and call flagging to provide individualized coaching for agents facing challenges, ensuring continuous improvement. This implementation resulted in an immediate increase in CSAT scores from the client’s end-users.

RESULTS

With their new efficient support model and framework provided by Provalus, the client has improved their overall performance. They are now able to identify areas of work, like service catalog tasks, that could be shifted to the service desk team to work during off-peak times, which optimized utilization and improved the service level response time to the customer base. The average tenure for Provalus agents on the client’s team is 1.5 years.

The client was able to cut out unnecessary time spent on Identity Access Management (IAM) and Password/Multi-factor Authentication (PW/MFA). The previous time to process account management tasks was over 16 hours, but Provalus reduced that time to less than 3 hours, an 83% cost and time reduction. The client’s time to process PW/MFA tasks was previously 15 hours, which was reduced to 4 hours, a 68% cost and time reduction.

Improving the client’s process resolution times not only increased efficiency but helped them gain credibility and customer satisfaction. Resolution times have continuously improved quarter-on-quarter since 2020 and Provalus has consistently increased our volume of tickets closed. Provalus also saved the client $4.4 million annually by merging multiple support desks into one streamlined support desk across the entire organization.

Now over two years into the partnership, Provalus has continued to provide Shift Left opportunities for the client not only with our outstanding CSAT, SLA, and KPI performance but also the utilization of automation into the client environment. Our ServiceNow practice fine-tuned the client’s AI bots to complete additional types of service requests and resolve more incidents in the client’s communication tool to drive out calls and increase self-service.

Provalus Celebrates Grand Opening of Technology Innovation Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Provalus held a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 3 ^rd for the grand opening of our newest technology innovation center in Tahlequah, OK.

Recognized in the community as the Workman’s building, this site previously served as a family-owned department store for more than fifty years. The transition from a department store to an innovation center with more than 200 workstations required a full renovation, but it was imperative that Provalus honor those who previously occupied the space and the exceptional service they provided to the Tahlequah community.

Most visible was the restoration and reinstallation of the historic “Workman’s Horse” statue to its original place on the building. A commemorative plaque was also installed, detailing its significance and the lasting impact it has had on the town, and our appreciation of those who made it possible. Other touches, such as the original Workman’s sign can be found throughout the space.

“Our goal was to create a space that reflects the spirit and legacy of this community. The contributions from local vendors and the support of state and local leaders, have transformed this historic building into a beacon of innovation and growth,” said OPS Vice President of Facilities, Will Ruzic. “We’re excited for what the future holds as we continue to serve the Tahlequah community from this landmark.”

Prior to the grand opening festivities, more than twenty local and visiting Provalus team members came together for Provide Day, a day in which we mobilize our workforce in support of the local community. Throughout the day, red volunteer shirts could be seen planting trees and cleaning up debris in Felts Park, painting over graffiti across multiple locations in town, and cleaning up sidewalks and walkways near the Workman’s space. Our efforts in the community will have a lasting impact for decades, alongside our ongoing commitment to creating new tech jobs in Tahlequah.

SFA ServiceNow Team Volunteers with Nacogdoches Hope Food Pantry

The ServiceNow team at SFA in Nacogdoches had an amazing time volunteering at the Nacogdoches HOPE Food Pantry. The team packed breads, fruits, vegetables, baking goods, nuts, pantry items, and frozen meat for more than 100 families. Members of these families include senior citizens, children, persons with disabilities, veterans, persons living is situational poverty, and others.

This food bank was established almost 30 years ago with a mission of providing supplemental food to Nacogdoches County residents in need. HOPE (Helping Other People Eat) allows individuals to choose which foods suit their dietary needs, making the process more comfortable and welcoming.

Provalus Raises Money for TGB Through Hugs & Kisses Fundraiser

Provalus hosted a Valentine’s Day-themed fundraiser to raise money for our charity partner The TGB Foundation! Employees were encouraged to purchase a “hug and kiss” for $1…AKA: a personal, heart-shaped and a bag of Hershey Kisses. Everyone wrote sweet notes to their co-workers and presented them on Valentine’s Day.

We raised $1,000 for The TGB Foundation’s STEM and Robotics program! Through these STEM-based programs, TGB is giving kids a glimpse into how I.T. can be a pathway to independence. The coding camps have been supported by Google in the form of teaching aid for their Grasshopper software and also incorporates Scratch coding and robotics education, making programming easy and fun for children. This offers kids a way to gain the confidence required for them to handle life’s challenges on their own… a chance for independence.

The foundation also supplied 35 Christmas trees that the Optomi and Provalus teams decorated for a fun competition. The winning tree came from our Provalus location in Jasper, Texas!

All of the trees were then donated to local business and children’s hospitals so they can celebrate the holiday in style. These included Rush Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Northeastern Health System Medical Oncology and Infusion Clinic in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Drexell and Honeybee’s Donations Only Restaurant in Brewton, Alabama and more.

The holiday season is a time for giving, gratefulness, and family. We are incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to spread cheer and love to all during this time of year. Cheers to many more smiles in 2023!

Provalus’ Newest Operation Will Bring Over 200 New Tech Jobs to Cherokee County

Provalus announces the opening of its fourth technology innovation center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the capitol city of the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. Our new space in downtown Manning is a renovated version of the Belk Building, a two-story red brick building built in 1919 that was the first shopping mall in Clarendon County. Located at 34 N. We’re honored to be located in such a historic spot in the community.

Kickstarting A Career In Tech | The Story of Lisa

A: How long have you been with Provalus?
L: I started in July of 2019 as a Software Developer and I am currently a team lead. I oversee a team of 3 for one of our top clients.

A: How did you come to work at Provalus?
L: In March of 2019 my husband and I decided we needed a change of scenery so we moved to Brewton from Northern Virginia. I was a substitute teacher in Virginia but I wanted to do something different. I saw the job posting for a Software Developer with Provalus and I wanted to give it a shot!

A: What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
L: I create reports to make sure all guidelines are being followed. I recently won the red hat certification scholarship and I am currently studying for the certification test! The red hat certification is a top notch certification for the Lennox Systems. I am also a part of several committees. One is the Community Closet Committee, which involves organizing donations. I appreciate how supportive the team and the community are of each other.

A: What do you enjoy about working at Provalus and how would you describe leadership?
L: They are very inclusive with their employees. Management is always available to talk and are very open with you. When the broader OPS leaders come to visit, they always want to talk to you and get to know about you.

A: Do you have aspirations to do something different in your career?
L: I hope to become red hat certified soon to help me grow in my current position and one day hold a leadership role!

A: What has been the biggest impact Provalus has had on the community?
L: They have brought life to downtown Brewton. I’ve seen so many new businesses open. When I first moved here, the downtown area felt like a ghost town, but it’s not a ghost town anymore!

A: Fun fact about yourself?
L: I love pizza and the beach so eating pizza on the beach is my favorite!

A: How long have you been with Provalus?
W: I started in 2019 as General Manager at Provalus. This focused solely on operations at Provalus. About a year ago I was promoted to Vice President of Facilities + Operations at Optomi Professional Services, which is my current role.

A: How did you come to work at Provalus?
W: I came out of economic development. I was an executive director for a 5 county Economic Development Alliance here in our rural area. I was contacted by Chuck Ruggiero (now the CEO of OPS) about bringing a couple hundred I.T. jobs to our area. I thought it was a joke at first and I hung up on him! It just didn’t seem real. After working on the project for over a year and half, I was approached to join Provalus and I jumped at the chance.

A: How long have you lived in Brewton?
W: I grew up in Dallas and met my wife, Molly at Auburn University. She is from Brewton so I fell in love with this community. I always told her when we have children, we are going to go to Brewton and raise our family there. Thats exactly what we did 23 years ago.

A: What do you enjoy about working at Provalus?
W: One of my biggest joys is just having impact. Taking empty buildings or green fields and turning them into jobs and knowing people are taking money home to their families. We are on a mission to impact rural communities and that’s my life. I chose to raise my family in a rural community and I’ve been fighting for rural life and I want other people to have that same opportunity.

A: What has been the biggest impact Provalus has had on the community?
W: It’s the physical presence and the people in these communities. We purposely locate our facilities in the heart of the downtown area. Rural areas have struggled with their downtown. I can say that from experience, for many years, I could ride through downtown and nothing’s happening. I mean, it’s still beautiful. They’re nice, historic buildings, but nobody’s in them. And now when I pull up to this 55,000 square foot facility, we’ve not only changed the landscape of downtown, but we have activity.

A: Fun fact about yourself?
W: I play Atticus Finch in the To Kill a Mockingbird play that Monroeville puts on ever year. Monroeville is the home of Harper Lee who wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s all local talent and it has been a tremendous experience. As you get older, you learn how much you grow when you get outside of your comfort zone.

A: What is your job title?
C: I started in a help desk position, then promoted to Team Lead 8 months later. I was then offered a bootcamp instructor position to train potential new hires, which is where I am currently.

A: How long have you been with Provalus?
C: Since February of 2020.

A: What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
C: I teach the basic fundamentals of the computer and Microsoft 365, as well as any other software programs that our clients may potentially use for their projects. This role has given me a chance to reflect and share my stories with others to inspire them, motivate them, and hopefully give them the drive they need to become successful.

A: What solutions do you bring through the bootcamp?
C: The training helps our new hires transition a little bit easier onto the client’s project by having knowledge of the software and functionality.

A: How did you come to work at Provalus?
C: I am originally from Colorado and came to visit a friend in Brewton to test out the area and see if I would like to stay permanently. My friend told me about Provalus and that they were hiring, so I was hired and actually entered the bootcamp myself. It has improved quite a bit since then! The new training equips the team to jump right into their project.

A: What do you enjoy about working at Provalus?
C: I’m really privileged and blessed to be with a company that cares about it being more than just a job. They want you to be here, they want you to be successful. A: How long have you been with Provalus?
P: I started in October of 2021 as a Technical Support Analyst and within a month I was promoted to a Team Lead managing 16 folks. About 3 and a half months later I jumped into the Team Manger role. Currently I oversee 32 individuals on 4 different teams.

A: What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
P: I check in on my team, help with any issues that come up. I also help prepare newer systems, help coordinate with implementation after we have a client sign a contract. I work with them on it real closely for the first couple of weeks. For the most part I am here to make sure that my team is happy first and foremost as well as that we are meeting the clients expectations. From putting out fires, to pep talks, and hosting meetings that may be difficult to have. I’m a cheerleader. I’m the guy there to help answer questions.

A: How did you come to work at Provalus?
P: I am a network engineer by trade and have worked for the department of defense. My expertise and my training through college and my degree is related to network infrastructure and architecture. I applied on LinkedIn and a big selling point for me besides the people and the environment was having a big slide in the building and being close to the beach!

A: What do you enjoy about working at Provalus?
P: I like the people and the structure that we have. It feels like they trust me to the point that I know I am making a difference. Its tangible. They trust my judgment. Also, the communication and the buzz in here with the new building. The excitement of bringing in a group of new people and having them go through the bootcamp and then getting to see their progress. There’s no telling to see what Provalus could be in the next 10 years. I’m excited to come to work everyday.

A: Do you have aspirations to do something different in your career?
P: I would just continue to try to rise up the ranks and challenge myself. It seems like my mindset is what Provalus was looking for. If I can continue to grow these teams under me, as well as develop my own communication, personal skills and leadership skills, I would love to just see how far I can take it with Provalus. If the leadership aspect of it doesn’t seem to be a fit down the road, I would love to jump back into the tech side of it. Sky’s the limit!

A: What has been the biggest impact Provalus has had on the community?
P: Folks constantly talk about Provalus whether they work here or not. The impact and the culture that is coming out of this place is building folks confidence. Provalus is providing that mental mind set that there’s other things out there. Build some skills and see where you can take it! The type of skills that people are learning here and the availability of certifications and mentorships and training, we have the avenues of making you as successful as possible. I don’t think there’s any other job like that out here. Provalus also works with the STEM program. We took some kids to New Orleans and they loved it. Some of them have never been out of Brewton so seeing the aquarium and other landmarks, I’m hoping sparks some ideas.

Veteran Turned SOC Manager | The Story of Jason

A: What is your job title?
J: I came on as a contract SOC (Security Operations Center) Manager, 6 months later promoted to Security Delivery Manager and I am currently the Security Service Delivery Director.

A: How long have you been with Provalus?
J: Since August of 2020.

A: What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
J: Making sure we are delivering for our clients. One of my teams is growing so I have meetings with the client to go through the logistics of that and to be sure everybody has come to an agreement on both sides that is beneficial for both the client and Provalus.

A: What do you accomplish for the client/what solutions do you bring?
J: We always strive for 100% satisfaction so making sure the team is monitoring what they are suppose to be monitoring and that tickets are being escalated properly. I have a lot of great leads under me that I am able to give some of that power to them. It is definitely earned. I consider my team extended family. I have 6 teams under me with a total of about 30 individuals.

A: How did you come to work at Provalus?
J: I was still active duty military at the time and I was in my transitions assistance class in the Navy and we were applying to jobs and I saw the SOC Manager position on LinkedIn. I really liked what the company had to offer and the transparency. I did my day job and worked overnights with Provalus up until I went on terminal leave with the military. Provalus worked with me while I was active duty military and they took care of me so I’m just making sure that I can take care of them in the same manner. I could have potentially went anywhere with the military background and the education but it just clicked here.

A: What do you enjoy about working at Provalus?
J: I’ve never worked at a place where I feel like my thoughts and feelings are heard. I have daily conversations with my direct supervisor. It really is all about the communication. I don’t want to downplay my time in the military because I greatly appreciate my opportunities there but I’ve never felt heard like I do here. Sometimes almost to a point where I’m like why is this still surprising. It’s a great feeling. The magic is definitely there.

A: What do you feel has been the biggest impact from Provalus being in the community?
J: Seeing the growth in the community. Since I’ve been here they’ve opened so many new places. I feel like the community has definitely welcomed Provalus with open arms. I think there’s real change coming to this small town.

M: That we can assist them right away. I am so proud that my team can resolve tickets and solve issues and problems.

M: I felt like it was time for me to do something different. I found a job posting online and my neighbor told me they had heard great things about Provalus so I applied!

A: What do you feel has been the biggest impact Provalus has made in the community?
M: Bringing in jobs for the people here. Giving people an opportunity. We have over 200 people working in this new amazing facility.

A: What do you enjoy about working at Provalus?

Why Veterans are a Perfect Fit for IT Careers

The military cultivates many skills… how to protect our country, how to function under pressure and how to deal with setbacks to name just a few. In fact, there are a lot of unique skills taught in the military that translate to the civilian sector. Yet when thinking of a post-military career, a vocation in IT probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But dig a little deeper and you’ll discover numerous things about the two are analogous.

Many of our employees are veterans. 22% in fact. In speaking with them, we’ve discovered that military training has helped them acquire the skills necessary to navigate many of the challenges that a career in technology brings. “Being in the military built the character necessary to deal with the same challenges we deal with here,” commented Hank House, a U.S. Navy veteran and team lead with Provalus.

Here we draw out five key values and skills the military teaches that directly translate to a career with Provalus:

Adaptability:
The average person working in the military uproots their life every couple years. In each place their role, skillset and scope of work often change. In a tech organization, there’s a certain level of flexibility needed with every role requiring employees to be versatile, willing to take on new roles and open to developing new skills with short notice. One can not be afraid of change in the military. The same is true for the field of IT.

Teamwork:
Nowhere else does a team of people operate as fluidly as in the military, where squads leverage each other to accomplish a common goal. “Nothing we do at Optomi Professional Services can happen if we don’t work as a team,” says Chuck Shaffer, veteran and Director of Strategic Accounts for OPS. “Nobody can do this alone.” While working in tech requires individual effort and drive, it’s also very team-oriented. In this industry, teams need to trust each other enough to hand control over to one another—for someone who’s served in or trained in the military, this comes naturally. “Overcoming challenges that you didn’t believe you could and being faced with challenges that you only had to rely on others to bring you through helped to develop the skill set necessary to overcome and tackle challenges in IT,” added House.

Dedication:
Being in the military instills the importance of reliability and personal responsibility. It demands a focus on the mission at hand to minimize distractions. Applying that dedication and commitment to the IT work will intrinsically result in success.

Preparation for Leadership:
The confidence and natural leadership skills that are critical in the military help veterans excel in IT careers. “Leading large groups of people in the military through standards and traditions helped me prepare for leadership here,” says House of Provalus. Leading technology teams requires diligence, confidence and sound decision-making skills. All are cultivated through a military experience.

NBC affiliate installs Sky-cam on our Provalus building

Strengthening throughout the day on Monday, the recent Tropical Storm Nicholas came in as a minimal category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour recorded by Hurricane Hunter aircraft just prior to landfall. But the recent tropical storm was no match for our newly completed Provalus facility. The new I.T. delivery center in the heart of Jasper, Texas is state-of-the-art… complete with a substantial back-up generator, internet and power stability eliciting the confidence of the NBC affiliate channel 12 news station to utilize the facility as their production site backup. Not only did our services remain stable, but the recent installation of the station’s sky-cam on the roof top demonstrates its reliability… solidifying our ability to support the needs.

The Provalus building is the tallest building in Jasper County and therefore serves as the ideal host for the NBC affiliate channel 12 news station sky-cam. The sky-cam is a live feed 24/7 and is the resource for the weather reporting as well. It is positioned on the NE corner of the Provalus roof. The studio controls the rotation of the camera with its view spaning from the left of the courthouse (the square) clockwise to a view over Main Street towards Sandy Creek Park. The camera covers ground for a distance of about 2 miles out.

Brewton Revitalization Underway

Back in 2017 when we envisioned how our revolutionary concept would impact America, we hoped to ultimately revitalize dormant small towns. We never dreamed our vision would be realized so quickly. In four short years, Provalus has infused this rural community of Brewton Alabama with new life. Not only have we created a new technology workforce by up-skilling hundreds of folks, we have also stimulated this rural economy enough to support several new businesses, attract a national pizza chain and help fuel the funding for a municipal water project. (See the post on this story .)

In addition to welcoming the Papa Johns pizza chain into town, the community has also experienced a surge of newly formed locally-owned business. Mark and Brianna Cole chose to open their coffee shop Shuga Beanz in Brewton. The third of its kind, the specialty coffee shop boasts a menu of flavor-infused energy drinks. Coffee/espresso, smoothies, super teas and their famous daily handmade whipped cream. They commented, “We are VERY excited to create a fun, relaxing environment for all to enjoy and hangout. Sugar Willies sandwich shop and Aunt Elsie’s Ice Cream Shop, a tattoo parlor and a nail salon are also among the new entrepreneurial establishments recently open. Just this summer, Mayor Lovelace coordinated the opening of a new community pool as well. The Mayor commented, “This is the first time in a number of years that we’ve had a public pool.”

The job creation initiative of Provalus has spawned a new economic era for the community. After Decades of Planning, Provalus Helps Deliver Municipal Water to the City of Brewton, Alabama

On behalf of the City of Brewton, Provalus is pleased to announce the installation of a new water supply for the community. In part from the influx of jobs created by Provalus, the team behind the city is now able to accomplish this 20+ year goal. City officials said the improvement comes as a direct result of the Provalus project in the city’s downtown area.

The new 200 thousand-gallon water tank will provide water for areas of the community that have never had municipal water. The project is expected to support the expansion of new businesses and residences for the entire area. The installation is underway and should be completed by July.

The Provalus team selected Brewton as the headquarters of its operations in 2017, anticipating growth to hundreds of employees. Currently, the impact outsourcing I.T. services firm has more than 120 Alabama-based employees. Construction on a $6.5 million state of the art tech center is expected to be completed in July. The new facility will provide an additional 55,000 square feet of space in Downtown Brewton and allow for additional client expansion.

These visual representations of text-based emergency response plans transform difficult to use written plans into highly-usable, geospatially accurate visual planning and response tools. This was an exceptional opportunity to help foster and develop the next waive of growing IT talent in small town America.

Our Inaugural Provalus Provides Day

What a day! Our first Provalus Provides Day was a not only impactful but heartwarming. We spent the entire day giving back with 3 different organizations. We kicked off the day with a Habitat for Humanity project where we demo’d a house of a first responder. It was hit by a hurricane, then caught on fire; the damage was overwhelming. We’re thankful to help give her a fresh start.

We then continued to Drexel & Honeybee’s, one of Brewton’s gems as a unique food bank that actually is a restaurant where you pay what you can. A special thank you to Steve Harvey for his tremendous donation to Lisa to help repair their appliances that were damaged in the hurricane.

We finished our day with a program that is near and dear to our heart, the Backpack Buddies program, a charity that provides a bag of meals to “food insecure children” to ensure that they don’t go hungry all weekend. As a competitive crew, we were thrilled to pack over 800 meals. What a wonderful way to kick off our season of giving and saying “THANK YOU” to our clients, teammates and our communities!!

Construction is in full swing on the new 50,000 square foot campus in Brewton, Alabama. The technology-inspired facility will house hundreds of newly-trained individuals from the community. Construction Manager Merrill Stewart of Birmingham-based Steward/Perry Company, Inc. commented, “I am excited anytime we start construction on a public/private project, particularly one with the potential to spur downtown growth like this one”, he said. “When there is adaptive re-use as we have in this case, there are always unknowns to be discovered, but the end result is redevelopment of the city center and a ‘catalyst for future growth’”, Stewart said, “All that growth generates tax revenue for the city. Unemployment in the United States rose to a staggering 14.7% in April of 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The United States is facing record unemployment levels as a result of the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic — up to 14.7% as of April — while the global outsourcing industry is projected to reach $481 billion by 2022, Provalus believes that the money is better spent in the training and employment of Americans. Its mission is to bring economic rejuvenation to small towns and rural communities through job creation and career training.

One of our healthcare clients has staff on the front lines in the effort to fight the Coronavirus. Their team of experts with degrees in more than 250 scientific, technical and professional disciplines are performing virus detection and conducting research as I write this. They are also in the process of developing an app that will measure factors that can be used as early indicators of viral infections. Incredible innovations are being made in the fields of science and technology at record pace to combat this virus.

Behind the scenes, our service desk team is contributing to the war against Coronavirus; assisting doctors and healthcare professionals as they fight on the front lines. It’s becoming increasingly important for my team and I to troubleshoot issues for these researchers rapidly. Our job is to assist them in getting ahead of the virus as efficiently as possible. We’re carefully monitoring service calls 24/7 for everything from connectivity issues, software accessibility issues, laboratory and other equipment malfunctions. Our work right now is to help remove barriers to support our client’s efforts in defeating COVID-19. We’re in this together, even from behind our computer screens. Even if it’s from our small town American homes where lumber yards, paper mills and other essential manufacturing defined us as America’s heartland. We were the backbone of American industry in the early days of our nation’s history. Through Provalus, rural communities are reemerging as a critical asset in the technology industry, especially in these times.

We’re heading to the Lone Star State… Provalus is opening its 2nd technology center in Jasper, Texas to provide a superior alternative to overseas outsourcing of services. “We’re proud to say our mission is to provide tech careers to bright under-employed individuals, especially in rural areas, and play a part in revitalizing America through job creation,” Provalus President, Chuck Ruggiero said.

City of Jasper Mayor Hon. Gary Gatlin commented, “I am so pleased to have witnessed our community working hard together for this achievement and am so proud to have been a part of it. I can see our Jewel of the Forest shining bright again like I’ve always known it could.”

After researching over 50 Texas locations, Provalus narrowed the selection down to two in December and executed the contract with Jasper, TX on January 31, 2019. The main tech building will be the former Peddler’s Publication House on the downtown square at 101 E. Houston St., Jasper, Texas 75951. The building will be renovated to accommodate at least 100 employees by 2020.

Dan Walker, President Jasper Economic Development Board of Directors remarked, “I have been intimately involved with economic development in Jasper for over 25 years and I have never seen an accomplishment as meaningful as this one. Jasper’s new partner, Provalus, will not only bring many much-needed, high-quality jobs, but their arrival is already providing a rejuvenating spark to our community that is wonderful to see.”

The Provalus facility will offer business process outsourcing (BPO), information technology outsourcing (ITO), and Support Services to clients including Fortune 500 – 1000 companies. Executive Director, Jasper Economic Development Corporation, Eddie Hopkins said, “This new relationship has grown through more understanding of their mission and how there will be mutual benefits resulting in the growth of Provalus and Jasper.” “We are thrilled to help generate substantial economic growth for the South East region of Texas as we continue our mission to strengthen rural America”, Ruggiero added. Projections are to open in March and hire about 30 employees initially.

Provalus’ flagship operation, located in Brewton, Alabama, paved the way for this 2nd delivery center and currently employs close to 100 Americans doing everything from SOC Services to Quality Assurance to Application Development to Service Desk support. The Brewton Delivery Center is expected to grow to over 300 Americans in the next few years. “Our growth would not be possible without the support of Brewton, Alabama Mayor Yank Lovelace, the city officials and the citizens of Brewton”, Ruggiero commented.

IT spending in 2018 is increasing at a rate of 6.2% over last year, representing the highest annual growth rate that Gartner has forecast since 2007 largely because of the declining U.S. dollar, said John-David Lovelock, chief forecaster at Gartner.

“A big piece of this is currency tailwinds,” Mr. Lovelock said. “The declining U.S. dollar means that money earned abroad translates into more U.S. dollars.”

Governor Kay Ivey announced that Provalus, a company specializing in business technology service and support, plans to invest $6.5 million to open a center in Brewton staffed with 300 workers.

Atlanta-based Optomi, one of the nation’s fastest-growing tech-staff firms, launched Provalus to provide an alternative to overseas outsourcing of business functions. Provalus aims to utilize untapped talent in small communities for technology, business and support positions.

“Our main mission is to provide value from the U.S. by bringing jobs back, especially to rural areas,” Provalus President Chuck Ruggiero said.

The center in Brewton, a city of 5,500 in Escambia County, will serve as the company’s flagship facility. Training for Provalus’ first group of technologists has already begun.

For years, American companies have been saving money by “offshoring” jobs — hiring people in India and other distant cubicle farms.

Today, some of those jobs are being outsourced again — in the United States.

Nexient, a software outsourcing company, reflects the evolving geography of technology work. It holds daily video meetings with one of its clients, Bill.com , where team members stand up and say into the camera what they accomplished yesterday for Bill.com, and what they plan to do tomorrow. The difference is, they are phoning in from Michigan, not Mumbai.

“It’s the first time we’ve been happy outsourcing,” said René Lacerte, the chief executive of Bill.com, a bill payment-and-collection service based in Palo Alto, Calif.

Nexient is a domestic outsourcer, a flourishing niche in the tech world as some American companies pull back from the idea of hiring programmers a world away.

Salaries have risen in places like South Asia, making outsourcing there less of a bargain. In addition, as brands pour energy and money into their websites and mobile apps, more of them are deciding that there is value in having developers in the same time zone, or at least on the same continent.

Optomi’s flagship facility is located in Brewton, Alabama which has a population of about 5,500. Training has begun for the first group and the bootcamp will yield a team of state-of-the-art technologists. Once staffing levels reach 50 employees, construction will begin on the first of three buildings, which will occupy a combined space of over 60,000 square feet. The campus will generate additional economic growth for the community in the way of commerce and real estate. “Governor Ivey made it clear from the start that she was behind new technology coming to Alabama,” Mayor Lovelace said. “This project was a culmination of the work of so many, and we couldn’t be prouder to welcome the company to Brewton.”

Brewton is eyeing an economic development deal to bring scores of new technical jobs to the area.

Monday, the city council set a July 17 public hearing date to discuss partnering with Optomi, LLC, a tech staffing firm with eight locations around the nation, including Atlanta, Dallas, Baltimore, Denver and Charlotte, N.C. The company’s website states the corporate mission as one that “connects those in the tech field such as project managers, business analysts and technologists with positions in mobile technology, network design and cloud and application development careers.”

Not much was said about the proposed agreement in the Monday’s council meeting other than the company is requesting an agreement to defray startup costs by granting funds (through grants) or “other things of value” to establish a new business known as Provalus.

The company’s website states the Roswell, Ga.-based Provalus “is on a mission to elevate under-served communities…and (provides) Fortune 1000 companies the dependable, quality and practical services they need…straight from the heart of America.” Fortune 1000 company examples include Walmart, Apple and AT&T.

At last weekend’s Brewton Blueberry Festival, Provalus personnel greeted local residents. The Alabama Career Center in Brewton announced a “mass hiring event” today through Friday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Brewton Chamber of Commerce.

City and corporate officials said they could not comment on specifics of the agreement or how many jobs the company will bring until after the July public hearing.
